If You Belong To LinkedIn...Here Are Some Tips You Can Use!

One feature you job seekers may not know about or have fully explored is LinkedIn Groups. LinkedIn Groups are free to join, and you can choose to join up to 50 groups from a list of thousands of user-created groups for literally just about anything. Not only do these groups provide you access to connect with and contact fellow group members who could become future partners, employees, investors, customers etc., but the groups’ newly updated discussion board feature can provide more networking opportunities, answers to your questions and insightful advice, tips and support. You can also join the groups’ subgroups and contribute answers, comments and your own expertise to the groups’ discussion boards to establish your own online personal brand on LinkedIn.

Going on an hourly employment job search is easier than you might think, but it pays off if you put the effort into it. There are many different resources available in finding work, and this article details most, if not all.There are many different resources available in finding work.

Employment Agency

The first stop on the journey is the state employment agency, such as Caljobs in California. (or whatever State you live in). Not only do many companies advertise with just the state employment agency, but the agency also has resources for you to use: computers, resume builders, printers, and even seminars on finding and keeping a job.

The Internet

There are many websites that can help you find jobs. The best place to start is the website of your local newspapers; they often have job listings that were once in the "Help Wanted" section. Craigslist is another good starting point, as many companies advertise job openings there rather than a local newspaper. Almost all nation-wide chain stores, such as Blockbuster and Wal-Mart, also accept applications exclusively through the internet.

Beating feet

Another way to find a job is to beat feet walking around, asking to see a manager and then inquiring if they are hiring. Fast food places are the best places to do this, as they are franchises (rather than chains) and rarely have an online application system. Make sure to bring a supply of resumes on a clipboard with you, in case they ask to see one. A manager may say, "No, not hiring now, but give me a resume and when we are we can give you a call." Having some handy saves time.You may want to tuck the applications you pick up underneath the resumes on the clipboard, to give an impression that this is the place you want to work.

Discouragement is the worst enemy you face when looking for a job; days can turn into weeks while you struggle to find employment. Still, do not give up; you can find work if you try hard enough. Off The Grid

This article was interesting to me. The government is stating a "comeback", but many just aren't feeling it. There is no tracking of unemployment once it runs out and many people are being under-employed making a lot less than they were previously. We are also not seeing publicized numbers for youth and minority groups. The numbers just aren't exactly factual (I'm trying to be nice) :)

Cover Letters That GET Attention!

Always send a cover letter with a resume when applying for a job. The cover letter and resume have the same goal—to get the interview; however, they should contain different information. The purpose of the cover letter is to develop a rapport with the hiring manager and give him or her an idea of your personality type.8 Keys to a Killer Cover Letter:

1. Keep your cover letter short. Do not restate your entire resume in your cover letter.
2. Keep it clear, concise, and simple. Tell them:A. Where you learned about the jobB. Why you’re the right candidate for the jobC. How they can contact you.
3. Experts say that your cover letter should be no more than four paragraphs on one page.
4. Use critical keywords that focus on your industry knowledge and skill set. In today’s competitive job market, larger companies often pre-screen the applicant pool by running all applications through a computer program designed to eliminate unqualified applicants.
5. Format in business-letter style using a font size of 10 or 12. Choose an easy-to-read font style, such as Arial or Times New Roman.
6. Start with your name, your address, and the date. Include an e-mail address if you have one.
7. Include a reference line indicating the position for which you’re applying, as well as the job reference number, if it’s listed.
8. Include a salutation. The letter has greater impact if addressed to the actual person that will be responsible for hiring

Opening—Get Their Attention:The best approach in the leading sentence is to stick with the facts and simply state why you’re writing the letter. The second sentence should act as your attention-getter.

Body—Gain Their Interest:Here’s where you spell out why they should hire you. If you have particular education or experience point it out. You need to relate your skills to their job requirements.

Closing—Once Again:State why they should hire you, ask for the interview and indicate any follow-up. Finally, add a complimentary closing such as, “Sincerely yours,” your name, contact information, and a list of any enclosures. Do not forget to sign the letter before mailing.Make sure you include your full contact information including mobile number, email, twitter and linkedin links.

Why Some Cover Letters FailJob: Applicants often make the mistake of assuming that employers never really read the cover letter, so they don’t spend much time putting one together. These are generally the same applicants questioning why they were not called in for an interview. Let’s put an end to the myth right now—hiring managers do indeed read cover letters. Your cover letter is the first impression an employer has about you, so make sure it stands out.

Cover Letter Red Flags:

1. Overall appearance is sloppy or not formatted properly.
2. Contact information is not provided and the candidate appears unavailable.
3. Spelling and/or grammatical errors.
4. Letter is not addressed to the name that appears in the ad.
5. Letter does not include an opening, body and closing paragraph.
6. No interesting, attention-grabbing opening statement.
7. No reference to the specific position sought.
8. Applicants use weak language and do not try to sell themselves.
9. Job seeker tries to use big words to impress the reader rather than keeping language simple and concise.
10. Letter reads generically—it’s obvious that no time was taken to customize to a particular job title, industry, etc.
11. It is obvious to the reader that the applicant is bragging or exaggerating about his/her past experiences and accomplishmentsSalary history not included when requested.
12, There is no indication of follow-up action by candidate.

Job Fair Important Steps!

Job fairs are great places to network, learn about companies and possibly land a job. If you plan on attending a job fair, we want to help you make the best of your experience. Be sure to take the following steps before, during and after you attend a job fair.

1. Pre-register - Your first step should be to go online to pre-register for the event. Pre-registering and bringing your confirmation page with you saves you time at the door. If you forget to bring your confirmation page or just forget to pre-register, we recommend that you attend the event early, so you do not end up in a long line.

2. Research - In most cases, companies that host a job fair will list the employers that will be in attendance and possibly some of the positions that they are hiring for. You should take advantage of this by looking up these companies online and reviewing the descriptions of the positions they're offering. This gives you time to think of how you are going to sell yourself as the top candidate for these positions.

3. Rehearse - Make sure that you rehearse some of the more commonly asked interview questions. Rehearsing is essential, especially for those who can't talk about their work history experience fluidly. Knowing how to answer the employers' questions effectively improves your chances of leaving a lasting impression in their minds.

4. Bring Résumés - You should bring plenty copies of your résumé for distribution to prospective employers. If you are attending a big job fair, it is recommended that you bring 25-40 copies. If you did research on attending employers and the positions that they are offering, you will have a better idea of how many copies that you'll really need.

5. Engage with Employers - Remember that each encounter is equivalent to a first round interview. These meetings are less formal but are vital in netting a job. These talks should be short because there are often long line of anxious job seekers waiting for their turns with the employers. Make sure that you take notes on these conversations. If you land a follow-up interview with the recruiter that you talked with at the job fair, notes will help you be consistent with what you told them previously.

6. Follow-ups - As the conversation winds down, make sure you ask for a business card. You can either follow up with a letter or a phone call 24-48 hours later. This lets the recruiter know that you're genuinely interested. The lasting impression you make may be enough to get you invited for a follow-up interview.

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to start preparing your resume to apply for job opportunities. While many careers may call for specific resume formatting (teachers, engineers, etc.), there are general aspects of resume building that can be applied to every resume. Organization, keywords that describe your skills related to the position, and a resume that highlights your strengths will be allow for the best chance at gaining employment.

Is your employment history relevant to your current professional goals? If so, does your resume reflect this?
Does your resume accurately convey what you have to offer professionally?
Are the right keywords used to describe your skills?
Is your cover letter attached to your resume, error free?

Typically, as a job seeker, you want to tell everyone who may offer some assistance about your job search. That is everyone except your current employer (and perhaps certain co-workers). If word gets out about your new job search, you may end up looking for employment out of need instead of want.

Here are some tips to make your next career move on the down low:

Protect your resume- Be careful how you post your resume online. Usually, there are options on job websites that allow you to decide who will see your resume.

Just say no- Reject any question about contacting your current employer about your job search, at least until you have a job offer.

Avoid electronic temptation- Be smart. Conduct your job search on your own time, not company time. Any equipment you use on the job may be used against you and result in termination. Consider an alternative source such as a library for your search.

If you believe a better job is out there for you, then go for it. Just don’t let your employer know about your search for a new opportunity. Remember, though, a job is a job and you want to keep it until you’re offered another one.

Finding a job through networking

"He or she who gets hired is not necessarily the one who can do that job best, but the one who knows the most about how to get hired." Richard Bolles

There are times in our lives when we need to look for a new job. Sometimes this is by choice, other times it isn't. You may have been told, "Go out and network", but not been told why, when, where or how to do it.

Networking is one of the most important parts of an effective employment strategy. In this article we'll look at some of the reasons why.

The changing nature of work and the end of careers

In the period immediately after the second world, school leavers would join a company with the expectation of a job for life. This changed for the generation leaving school from the 1980s, who anticipated career progression through a number of different organizations. For the current generation of school leavers, and for many others, the notion of a single lifetime career, perhaps the notion of jobs themselves has probably disappeared.

This means the need to find a job isn't always by choice.

Because we live in a world that is changing all the time, many of us are faced with the prospect of our current job becoming obsolete. We are likely to need to reapply our skills into different jobs from the ones we did before. The career ladder is today more like a maze. Sometimes you may go up, other times left, right or even backward.

According to Leon Benjamin, "The future of work is only about one thing and that's change. It makes no difference if you're an employee, an entrepreneur, a small business owner or freelance consultant, and the means by which we will secure the work we want that suits our individual lifestyles, will be by cultivating relationships."

What is networking?

Networking is "a process of interacting with people who usually share similar interests to yours". The interactions are usually the sharing of information about those interests, and the passing on of names of others who also share those interests." It should benefit both parties.

With respect to finding work, it is a way of getting new contacts and information. Some people love to network; others find it really hard, especially as a way to find work.

** An attitude of giving **

Dr Ivan Misner, founder of networking group BNI, promotes the philosophy of "givers gain". The more you give unconditionally, the more you get back.

However, this goes against the philosophy of selling, and, it must be said the culture of most large organizations. Large organizations tend to reward scarcity of knowledge, so many feel they are like to get on in an organization by holding back, in terms of knowledge, as much as they can. So if you've worked for a large organization for most of your life, don't worry if this feels, at first, like the wrong thing to do.

** The value is in the links **

The value of networking is not so much about the quality of the people you meet, but the quality and quantity of the people they know. The links, the connections and introductions people can make, are more important than the wealth or expertise of the person themselves.

One of our friends is a professional storyteller. As you can imagine, professional storytellers don't earn very much money, and if you met her you might question the value of networking with someone like her. However, your attitude might change if I told you that she's a friend of a (now former) Cabinet Minister in the British government. It turns out that a former flat mate of hers, when she lived in Newcastle, became the partner of a man who went on to become a leading light in the Blair government.

Networking is often about being a switchboard - people pass through you to get somewhere else. More often than not there's little likely reward to you, yet the more people see you as the natural place to go to get connected, the more like that the connections you want are likely to be attracted to you. As a result, you'll see the connections to many of the people or organizations you want to connect with.

Why Network?

** Three key benefits **

Professor Wayne Baker looked at the findings from research into networking, and found three key benefits: 1 Finding a job. More people find jobs through personal contact and by any other means. 2 Pay and promotion. People with rich social networks are paid better and promoted faster at younger ages. 3 Influence and effectiveness. People who are central in an organization's networks are more influential than others.

** Up to 80% of positions are filled without employers advertising **

It is claimed that up 80% of all jobs are never advertised. They are filled through referrals and recommendations, direct approaches by candidates and by using agencies. For arguments sake, let us imagine the figure is half that; there are still a huge amount of job opportunities that you'll miss if you don't network.

According to a study by Drake Beam Morin, 64% of the people surveyed said they found their new jobs through networking. More likely than not, the best jobs are likely to be those that aren't advertised, because they will have been filled before the organisation needs to pay for advertising.

** You'll learn **

Networking puts you in contact with people you might not otherwise meet. You'll increase your knowledge about the subject and be connected to more people within this community. You'll also learn about yourself. I've heard one networking expert say "Until you find yourself, you cannot find work".

Networking is also a great way to check on a regular basis your value on the open market, and you don't have to go on a job interview to get this valuable feedback.

** Master mind group **

In Napoleon Hill's famous book, "Think and Grow Rich", he stated that one of the 13 Principles common to every successful person was having a "master mind group". All the successful people he researched had people around them who provided a support structure that made them better, more successful, people.

Networking is one of the best ways to create your own mastermind group, as it brings you into contact with a wide range of potential members of your mastermind group.

** Networking is not evil **

Most of us believe in a meritocratic society. The most able and hard working people are rewarded the most, and you may feel uncomfortable with the idea of gaining benefits because of whom we know.

You can use networking to get an introduction, to get a warm referral. You can also use networking to build up your expertise and create a team that you can use as a support team: sub contractors, mentors, master mind groups and so on. After that, it's up to you. Relationships need to be nurtured. They grow over time, and from that you develop trust and credibility. They can't be faked.

Summary

As we move towards a relationship economy, with the nature of work changing, networking can help you connect with the people who need your skills and can also help you increase your value as an employee.

Here are a few tips if you decide to "quit" your job:

"Give two weeks notice. Not only your past, but also your future employer will consider it a plus.
* Explain that you are leaving because of growth opportunities with the new company, not due to dissatisfaction, even if it’s not true.
* On your last day write your boss and colleagues a thank-you note via email about how much you enjoyed working with them.
* Offer to train your replacement and if possible, be available after you leave to answer questions.
* Make sure your work is caught up before you leave and write notes, when relevant, to guide and inform your replacement.
* If you have external customers, collaborate with your boss as to how to transition them to your replacement. When telling customers you are leaving say only good things about the company and your experience there.
* You only want to leave the job, not the relationships you have built."

“Aren’t you overqualified for this position?” That question haunts many job seekers and too often leaves them speechless, unsure what to answer. Is the “overqualified” question a thin disguise for age bias, or a euphemism for, “Are you too old?”

Does it mean the interviewer is questioning your goals or commitment? Could the “overqualified” label also mean the questioner is leery about supervising an older worker? I'm on the prowl for a part-time editorial assistant in the New York area at a major non-profit organization. The job was posted two weeks ago and has yielded over 450 resumes. What started out as an exciting task of expanding my skeleton staff has turned into a harsh reminder of how bleak things are out there in the (un)employment world - especially for people with a writing/communications/journalism background.

Dozens of applicants have Ivy League educations. Hundreds have advanced degrees. And almost every single person is over-qualified for the $16-an-hour gig. The biggest challenge, from a hiring perspective, is finding someone who will stick around for at least six months.

Wading through a sea of applicants is tough work. But three candidates made my life easy. They gave me the opportunity to reject them instantly. Why?

Yet even with 15 million people hunting for work, even with the unemployment rate nearing 10 percent, some employers can't find enough qualified people for good-paying career jobs.

Ask Steve Jones, a hospital recruiter in Indianapolis who's struggling to find qualified nurses, pharmacists and MRI technicians. Or Ed Baker, who's looking to hire at a U.S. Energy Department research lab in Richland, Wash., for $60,000 each.

His name is Dave, sometimes he goes by Billy and he wants to help you make a lot of money.

His face is plastered online. He’s usually smiling in his photo and ready to tell how he made “thousands of dollars working for Google” (Stock Quote: GOOG) from the comforts of home.

A click later and you’re taken to Dave (or Billy’s) web site, where he explains how he was able to pay his rent, buy a new big-screen TV and go on vacation with money he made off Google ads. He offers to let you in on his secrets, for a fee. Two hundred dollars will buy you a “kit” that supposedly teaches you how to “get a job with Google” and start earning money immediately.

Low Wage Workers Are Often Cheated, Study Says...

Low-wage workers are routinely denied proper overtime pay and are often paid less than the minimum wage, according to a new study based on a survey of workers in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Less Than Minimum

The study, the most comprehensive examination of wage-law violations in a decade, also found that 68 percent of the workers interviewed had experienced at least one pay-related violation in the previous work week. “We were all surprised by the high prevalence rate,” said Ruth Milkman, one of the study’s authors and a sociology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the City University of New York. The study, to be released on Wednesday, was financed by the Ford, Joyce, Haynes and Russell Sage Foundations. In surveying 4,387 workers in various low-wage industries, including apparel manufacturing, child care and discount retailing, the researchers found that the typical worker had lost $51 the previous week through wage violations, out of average weekly earnings of $339. That translates into a 15 percent loss in pay.

Know Your Rights! Credit Reports and Employment

Employers can request credit reports before making a hiring decision, but applicants should be aware of their rights in this regard.

Many job applicants are discovering that employers require pre-employment credit reports before they hire. For many companies, a credit report has become a screening tool to evaluate a candidate and to exercise due diligence in the hiring process. But for job applicants, a credit report can feel like an invasion of privacy or a violation of their rights. However, job applicants have substantial legal protection concerning the use of credit reports for employment. In fact, an employer cannot obtain a credit report without an applicant's written permission and cannot use it to deny a job until the applicant has had the chance to review the report.

Employers seek credit reports on job applicants for a variety of reasons. Some employers utilize a credit report to verify that an applicant is responsible and reliable or to confirm identity. Other employers are concerned about hiring persons who cannot manage their affairs, or whose monthly debt payments are too high for the salary involved. Many employers limit credit reports to management and executive positions, or to positions that have access to cash, assets, a company credit card, or confidential information. Employers are well advised to run credit reports on bookkeepers or others who handle significant amounts of cash.

However, employers should approach the use of credit reports with caution, and have polices and procedures in place to ensure that the use of credit information is both relevant and fair. An employer should first determine if there is a sound business reason to obtain a credit report. Unless the information in a credit report is directly job related, its use can be considered discriminatory. For example, running a credit report for an entry-level person with low levels of responsibility or no access to cash is probably not a good practice. Unnecessary credit reports can discourage applicants from applying, and running mass credit reports on all applicants, regardless of the position, can have the effect of discriminating against certain protected classes. In addition, employers should avoid making negative hiring decisions on information that is old or relatively minor.
